U.S. stock indexes rose strongly on Tuesday as investors assessed geopolitical news and corporate earnings reports.
Shares of 3M Co. jumped 7.3%. The company, which makes tens of thousands of different products, increased its net profit and revenue in the second quarter and also raised its forecast for adjusted earnings for the current year.
Charles Schwab Corp. shares fell 2.5%, although the financial company increased net profit and revenue in the latest quarter, while adjusted earnings and revenue exceeded market forecasts.
General Motors' market capitalization increased 4.9%. The U.S. automaker cut net profit by 31.1% in April-June despite a 1.9% increase in revenue.
U.S. toy maker Hasbro Inc. increased revenue by 16% in the second quarter and returned to net profit, while adjusted earnings and revenue exceeded market expectations. The company's market value rose 8.8%.
Halliburton Co. shares fell 5.5%, although the U.S. oilfield services company increased net profit by 13.1% and revenue by 3.7% in the latest quarter.
Northrop Grumman Corp. shares declined 2.2%. The U.S. defense corporation reduced net profit by 7% in the second quarter of 2026 despite a 5% rise in revenue.
Tesla's market value rose 2.5%. The company announced the launch of its robotaxi service in the cities of Tampa and Orlando, Florida.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.74% at the close of trading on Tuesday to 52,224.64 points.
The Standard & Poor's 500 increased 0.89% to 7,509.2 points.
The Nasdaq Composite gained 1.29% to finish trading at 25,837.13 points.
