On July 21, as part of her visit to Addis Ababa, Anna Hakobyan, the wife of the Prime Minister of Armenia and executive director of the My Step Foundation, visited the St. George Armenian Church in Addis Ababa accompanied by Ethiopian-Armenian community representative Salbi Nalbandyan and Armenian Ambassador to Ethiopia Sahak Sargsyan, the My Step Foundation reported.

An Armenian chapel was built in Addis Ababa in 1923, and after 1935, philanthropist Mihran Muradyan initiated the establishment of the St. George Church at the same location. The church’s opening ceremony was attended by Empress Menen Asfaw of Ethiopia, symbolizing the important role and reputation of the Armenian community in the country’s public life.

It is the only active Armenian Apostolic Church in Ethiopia and serves as the seat of the Ethiopian spiritual leadership under the Armenian Diocese of Egypt, continuing to coordinate the religious life of the Armenian Apostolic community in Ethiopia, which numbers around 100 people.

During the visit, Anna Hakobyan toured the church, visited the deacons’ class, and viewed old booklets containing Armenian Apostolic liturgical texts and hymns.

As part of the visit, Hakobyan also visited the Gevorgyan Seminary operating next to the church, as well as the community’s “Armenia” sports hall.
