UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said in an interview with BBC that he is prepared to criticize U.S. President Donald Trump if it serves Britain's national interests.

He added that his first conversation with Trump went well.

When asked twice whether he trusts the U.S. president, Burnham replied: “The world is changing, and obviously events need to be assessed as they unfold.”

Asked whether he would be ready to criticize Trump if appropriate, Burnham said: “Of course. First and foremost, you must defend your national interests.”

He also said that he was concerned by the start of the conflict with Iran initiated by the U.S. president, and stressed that he “will not stay silent about what he believes is right.”
