U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking at a memorial service for Republican Senator Lindsey Graham at Washington National Cathedral, recalled that their relationship began with a conflict.

Trump said that in 2016, during his first presidential campaign, Graham made a “rather unpleasant” remark about him. In response, he did something he himself described as a mistake: he publicly revealed the senator’s personal phone number to millions of viewers.

“I, of course, did what I should not have done. I shared his personal phone number with millions of people who were watching that day,” Trump said, drawing laughter from those present.

According to the president, despite that incident, Graham ultimately “won the last victory”: after a brief conflict, they became close friends, and the senator kept in touch with him over the next ten years.

“While I blew up his phone for one day, we became great friends, and Lindsey didn’t stop calling me for the next 10 years,” Trump said.
