Thirteen people were killed in a series of earthquakes in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Wednesday.

The prime minister noted that the disaster caused significant damage, including collapsed buildings, fires, and damaged roads.

Meanwhile, NHK reported that officials in Kumamoto Prefecture said that as of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, three people had died, five were in cardiopulmonary arrest, and another 31 people were injured.

In addition, an explosion occurred at a shopping mall in the town of Kashima in Kagoshima Prefecture when the earthquake struck. A source told Kyodo that the mall was damaged by a gas explosion.

Officials said the second floor of the building had collapsed. Search and rescue operations at the scene continued throughout the night.

It was later confirmed that two people had died. Both victims were women in their 20s. Authorities said one more person was in cardiopulmonary arrest. The rest of those rescued sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

About 200 people were evacuated before the second floor of the shopping mall collapsed.

Two more people were found in cardiopulmonary arrest at a factory in the city of Yatsushiro on the grounds of a Nippon Paper Industries plant, which was also hit by the disaster; a smokestack collapsed on the site.

Officials in Kumamoto say that another nine people are listed as missing.

Shinkansen bullet train services are still reported to be suspended.

Meanwhile, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways canceled 11 and two flights respectively due to the earthquake.

Meanwhile, Kyushu Electric Power Company reported that as of 7:30 a.m., about 37,000 households in Kumamoto Prefecture remained without electricity.

Earlier on Tuesday, seismologists recorded a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, with the strongest tremors felt in the cities of Uki and Kikawa.
