Water shortage in Azerbaijan is becoming an increasingly serious challenge, said Nasar Hayat, representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Azerbaijan, in an interview with Azerbaijani media.

According to Hayat, about 70 percent of fresh water resources worldwide are used in agriculture.

Water shortage in Azerbaijan is becoming an increasingly acute problem. Azerbaijan is a downstream country for all rivers, and most of the country's fresh water is formed at the expense of rivers flowing from neighboring countries. Therefore, it is necessary to determine how to use water efficiently. Without water resources, it is impossible to produce the necessary food. Excessive irrigation or evaporation of water under the sun is unacceptable, the FAO official noted.
