Barack Obama is launching a podcast about books that have “deeply shaped his worldview and our society” — from Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon to John le Carré’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
The podcast, titled A Great Book with Barack Obama, will debut on Audible on September 24.
In each of the six episodes, the former U.S. president will discuss one of his selected works with a special guest.
In addition to Morrison and le Carré, Obama included the following books on his list:
The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin
All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy
Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren
“Great books have always helped me understand who I am and what I believe in,” Obama said. “The six books featured in this series have been with me throughout my life, and each of them can teach us a great deal about understanding the human experience.”
“For this podcast, I invited friends to discuss why these books resonate, how they shape our understanding of ourselves and each other, and why literature matters more than ever,” he added. “I hope listeners will be inspired to discover — or rediscover — the kinds of books that change how a person sees themselves and the world.” The names of the podcast’s guests have not yet been announced.
