On August 22, a working discussion on making amendments and additions to the law on citizenship of Armenia was held under the leadership of Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan, Armenian News-NEWS.am was informed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The agenda included matters related to the more effective organizing of the processes of granting citizenship of the Republic of Armenia, improving the respective existing legal regulations, and resolving existing problems in this regard.

Arpine Sargsyan stressed that it is necessary to reassess the institution of Armenian citizenship, and underscored ensuring a stable legal connection between the person being issued Armenian citizenship and Armenia.

 “We are reevaluating the procedures for granting and terminating [Armenian] citizenship and base their logic on a new approach to state-citizen relations. The basis of all the solutions we have developed should be the perception that we must ensure a new quality from the point of view of state-citizen relations,” the minister of internal affairs said.

Proposals were presented to review and improve the procedures for obtaining and restoring citizenship of the Republic of Armenia, and related processes. Also, the possibilities of improving the respective legal requirements and existing mechanisms were discussed, as well as solutions aimed at resolving problems that have arisen in this regard, taking into account the best international practices in order to adapt them to the legal and practical peculiarities of Armenia.

Also, the minister of internal affairs instructed to finalize the package based on the results of the discussion and submit it for public discussion in Armenia.
