Renault has slightly updated its Renault 5 electric hatchback, increasing its range and equipping it with new design options, Autocar reports.
The changes are designed to increase the model’s competitiveness amid the emergence of new competitors. Thanks to more aerodynamic mirrors and a change in the lower part of the body, both versions of the car now can travel a little more on a single charge.
The declared range of the base Urban Range version with a 40 kWh battery has increased to 315 km instead of the previous 310 km. And in the case of the more popular Comfort Range version with a 52 kWh battery, the range has increased from 410 to 430 km. In the coming weeks, the base Renault 5 will also have a new 36.5 kWh battery with lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, instead of the current 40 kWh NMC battery.
Despite the smaller capacity, the new battery will provide a range of about 420 km, which is only 10 km less than the current range. At the same time, however, it will charge somewhat more slowly: the charging capacity from the home network will be up to 6.6 kW, but at a fast public station—up to 80 kW.
The updated Renault 5 has new personalization options, too. A new red color has become available for the body, borrowed from the related Nissan Micra electric car, and the roof can be ordered with a star pattern and gray or red trim. The Techno and Iconic trim levels have gold-colored wheel rims, reminiscent of the design of the legendary Renault Clio Williams of the 1990s.
Inside, the Iconic versions have blue-gray upholstery instead of yellow. In addition, the car has been equipped with a wireless smartphone charging system. The control of driving modes has also changed: the separate Multi-Sense button has been removed, since now the Smart system automatically selects the mode—depending on the operation of the gas pedal. But if necessary, the Sport, Eco, Comfort, and Individual modes can still be selected like before via the touch screen or voice control.
