The UN human rights office has condemned the decision of the US authorities to designate the pro-Palestinian Palestine Action group as a terrorist organization. This was noted in a statement by the office of UN human rights chief Volker Turk, Reuters reports.

The designation "appears to be both a disproportionate and unnecessary ⁠restriction on the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association as well as the right to participate in public affairs," the statement said, in particular.

"Expansive use of the term 'terrorism' has been documented to have a chilling effect on civic space," it added.

Earlier, the US Treasury Department included the Palestine Action network on its list of terrorist organizations. The movement is based in the UK. In the summer of 2025, the British authorities also declared the organization banned. Since the ban came into effect, more than 3,000 people have been arrested across the country during demonstrations, with more than 700 facing charges.

Palestine Action continues to challenge the ban in court.
