Israeli police have detained four people on suspicion of spitting at the Armenian Patriarchate in Jerusalem in the Old City. Three more people were detained on suspicion of desecrating Muslim graves, The Times of Israel reports.

Police said four other suspects were detained “in real time” after allegedly spitting at the Armenian Patriarchate compound. Later the suspects were all released under restrictive conditions after officers questioned them on suspicion of conduct that could harm public safety, the police statement said.

Earlier, Arab media outlets had released surveillance footage showing at least one incident of spitting at the Cathedral of Saint James, the main church of the Armenian Patriarchate in Jerusalem. According to these media outlets, the incident took place the night before the video was released.

At the same time, the police statement suggests that the four arrested individuals could have committed similar acts later in the week. Thus, it is about at least several separate episodes of desecration of the territory of the Armenian Patriarchate in Jerusalem.

Three more adult suspects were detained in connection with the desecration of Muslim graves. Police released a video in which three people approach a tombstone, after which two of them kick it. Police continue to investigate incidents of desecration of religious shrines in the Old City of Jerusalem.
