Armenian-Russian relations are one of the reasons for the arrest of Armenia's second president Robert Kocharyan, his son, opposition MP Levon Kocharyan, stated during a press conference on Tuesday.

Responding to a question about the statement made by the Russian Federation (RF) president's aide on the eve of the recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Levon Kocharyan noted that he did not have details about whether his father's arrest was discussed during the mentioned meeting, but emphasized that the mention of it in itself testifies to the importance of this matter.

At the same time, Levon Kocharyan sees a clear connection between Robert Kocharyan's arrest and relations between Yerevan and Moscow.

"My father has always advocated friendly, partnership, strategic relations with the RF—and not only the RF. Our [i.e. Armenia’s] task is that there is no need to be hostile to Russia. One can and should develop relations with the West, but not at the expense of hostility with Russia. When we say that there is no need to enter the center of a clash of geopolitical interests, it means that our task is not to appear among those who have already appeared in such a center, so that the [incumbent Armenian] authorities do not unwisely lead us to such an end," Levon Kocharyan noted.
