A gold mine shaft collapsed in Sudan, killing at least 11 miners and injuring 30, a state official said Sunday, while a search continued for the missing under the debris, AP reports.

The incident occurred in the remote Oni area of the country's northeast.

Witnesses said the collapse began Saturday evening.

A spokesman for the state-owned Sudanese Mineral Resources Co. said 11 bodies had been recovered as of Sunday, while 30 people had been rescued.

It was the second collapse of an informal gold mine in Sudan in a week. Earlier, on September 13, at least 82 people were killed in a series of mine collapses in the west of the country.
