Hundreds of millions of dollars of Venezuelan gold “sits untouched” in US warehouses as American refiners shy away from it due to possible links to corruption, criminal gangs, and environmental damage, sources said, The New York Times reports.

“But partly as a consequence of the [US] administration’s hasty approach, all that gold — hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth — sits untouched in warehouses, according to three people with knowledge of the shipments. Refiners would need to guarantee, under international rules, that the gold has not funded gangs, environmental destruction or corruption,” the report says.

This is gold that US authorities allowed entering the country in January after the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Earlier, Axios reported that Venezuelan gold mining company Minerven had agreed to sell 650 to 1,000 kg of gold bars to commodities trader Trafigura. The company was expected to then ship the precious metal to US refineries.
