Armenia's ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is also conditioned by Yerevan's policy of rapprochement with the European Union (EU), announced the press service of the office of the Russian Security Council.

The Russian Security Council noted that when ratifying this document, the Armenian authorities justified this move by the need to initiate an international investigation into crimes committed during Armenian-Azerbaijani border escalations. Meanwhile, according to the organization, Yerevan has not yet submitted a request to initiate such an investigation.

The Russian Security Council added that recognition of the ICC's jurisdiction is "one of the key political conditions" for countries aspiring to join the EU.

Also, the Russian Security Council reaffirmed Moscow's view on the ICC, describing its activities as politicized.

Referring to possible new sanctions by Washington against the ICC, the Russian side drew attention to the increased US pressure on the court and Washington's calls for other countries to abandon the Rome Statute. And when asked whether this policy could affect Yerevan's position, the Russian Security Council suggested asking this to the Armenian authorities.

The parliament of Armenia ratified the Rome Statute on October 3, 2023. The country explained this decision by the need to increase its own security level amid border tensions with Azerbaijan.
