Iran has executed Ali Hemmati Sistaniyan and Majid Nik-Andish, who were accused by the judiciary of participating in the killing of four security force officers during the January protests in Mashhad.

The executions, which were carried out Wednesday morning, were reported by the Iranian judiciary's Mizan news agency. The investigation alleges that they had attacked shops, set fire to buildings, and damaged public property in the aforesaid protests. According to the judiciary, both men confessed to committing a number of crimes during interrogations and the trial.

Earlier, the court had sentenced both men to death. The sentences were later reviewed and confirmed by the Supreme Court of Iran, after which they were carried out.
