Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reflected on the recently published Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) report on the parliamentary elections held in Armenia on June 7.

During Thursday’s press briefing, the premier stated that he shares all the concerns expressed in the report, and promised to study the document and the submitted proposals in detail.

According to Pashinyan, the authorities of Armenia themselves have noted the need to make radical changes to the country’s electoral system after the aforesaid elections in order to exclude or minimize electoral violations.

As a main problem in that regard, Pashinyan pointed to vote buying. Moreover, as per the PM, these alarms were sounded by Armenia’s civil society itself, to which the country’s authorities responded by initiating criminal cases.

Referring to the incident with the opposition Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP), Pashinyan expressed the opinion that the legitimate choice of citizens cannot be subordinated to one or two incidents.

To note, this about the invalidation of the election results in several election precincts on June 7, after which the Central Electoral Commission of Armenia declined to assign a revoting there, and s a result, the PAP did not win parliament seats.

However, according to the Armenian premier, the national picture proves that Armenian citizens do not think that their will was not taken into account, and therefore holding a revote would mean distorting the very meaning of the elections.

As per Pashinyan, in order to exclude such cases in the future, it is necessary to change and improve the quality of Armenia’s electoral system.

“The question is not about staying in power forever, that's not what it's about," the Armenian premier added, in particular.
