News is spread within the media of Turkey, according to which the country’s incumbent president, Abdullah Gul, could become the next Secretary General of NATO. 

It is noted that the term in office of the current NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, comes to an end in 2013, but he wishes to remain in office until 2014. At the same time, Turkish President Abdullah Gul’s term in office will come to an end in 2014, and, subsequently, Gul could nominate his candidacy for the position of the Secretary General of NATO.    

To note, Turkey is a NATO member since 1952, and one of the Organization’s serving assistant secretary generals is Turkish.
