Unusual "races" will be held Sunday at a base of the Italian Navy between a fifth-generation F-35B fighter jet and a Ferrari SF90 road hybrid supercar, Techkult reports.

The goal of this competition is to compare the speed capabilities of the car over a short distance before the fighter jet takes off.

The length of the first distance will be half a kilometer on the runway, which is specially covered with aluminum for the F-35B. It is expected that the fighter jet will need more time to fully accelerate after the start, but despite this handicap, it should reach the finish line and overtake the Ferrari, which is accustomed to fast starts.

The Ferrari will be driven by Fabio Barone, the owner of seven speed records. According to him, the car will accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 2.8 seconds, and the modified engine will reduce this figure to 2.6 seconds. As a result, Barone will reach a speed of 330 km/h and cover the entire distance in 8–9 seconds, experiencing 2.2 g overload.

The acceleration algorithm of the F-35B is slightly different. Its speed will be provided by the Pratt & Whitney F135 turbojet engine in conjunction with a short take-off system. And it will take off after the “finish line.”

The second race will continue after the F-35B takes off, up to the 2.8 km mark, while the fighter will fly at an altitude of about 20 meters. According to Defense News, the participants of this race will share a runway about 35 meters wide, maintaining a distance of 15 meters from each other. At the same time, driving on an aluminum surface can cause certain difficulties for Ferrari, as this surface will vibrate more strongly than on ordinary asphalt.

The organizers of such unusual races intend to test two completely different concepts of acceleration: in the case of Ferrari, the ability to quickly convert engine power into forward motion using the wheels; and in the case of the F-35B, the ability to convert the huge thrust of an aircraft engine into acceleration before taking off.
