Peace must enter the lives and hearts of the families of the missing. Former Turkish Foreign Minister and parliamentarian Mevlut Cavusoglu stated this at the Fourth International Conference held in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, within the framework of the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons, the latter’s media report.
Cavusoglu noted that peace talks and agreements can end hostilities, but reconciliation is necessary for lasting peace.
“The South Caucasus has been plagued by conflict, forced displacement, and deep humanitarian suffering,” he said.
According to Cavusoglu, the inclusion of a provision on missing persons in the preliminary peace agreement reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan is an important indicator, which shows that the matter is recognized as an integral part of the broader peace process.
"Recognizing this open wound as an integral part of the peacebuilding and reconciliation process will undoubtedly increase mutual trust between people and create a solid social foundation for sustainable peace," Cavusoglu added.
