The US Navy grouping in the Arabian Sea southeast of the Iranian coast has been reduced to 14 ships, according to the information service of the United States Naval Institute.
Two US aircraft carrier strike groups—the USS George Washington and the USS George H. W. Bush—each carrying 48 fighter jets, are currently on combat duty in the Arabian Sea.
In addition to the aircraft carriers, nine guided-missile destroyers and three large amphibious assault ships with a Marine expeditionary battalion are near Iran.
These US warships, aircraft, and Marines are primarily engaged in maintaining a naval blockade of Iran and ensuring the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier, the number of American warships in the region—including during military operations—had exceeded 20.
At the same time, against the backdrop of the Yemeni conflict, two American destroyers are operating in the Red Sea region, and three more US Navy destroyers and one cruiser are located in the northwestern Indian Ocean.
