Two people were killed and another injured when a rock formation collapsed near the entrance to the Goreme Open-Air Museum in Turkey's Cappadocia region, TGRT Haber reports.

The incident was caused by a landslide and rockfall following heavy rains, Nevsehir provincial governor Huseyin Kok said. Rescuers found the bodies of the two victims, the governor said.

Another injured person was taken to hospital. Numerous emergency services were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call about the incident. The collapsed formation was one of the characteristic rock formations of Cappadocia, known as "stone pillars" or "magic chimneys."

They were formed as a result of centuries of weathering of volcanic rocks and have become one of the main natural attractions of the region, which is visited by tourists from all over the world every year.

A similar incident had occurred in Cappadocia in 2024 also, notes TGRT Haber. At that time, a tufa rock weakened after snowfall had collapsed at night. But no one was injured, and there was no material damage.
