Control over all of Armenia’s borders will gradually be transferred to the Border Guard Service of the Republic of Armenia. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made the statement on November 2 during a joint meeting of the parliamentary standing committees discussing the draft state budget for 2027.

“This process will require a certain period of reforms,” the prime minister added.

Armenian border guards have already taken control of sections of the country’s state border and border checkpoints (BCPs) previously operated by Russian border guards. These include Zvartnots International Airport, the Agarak checkpoint on the border with Iran, and the Margara and Akhurik checkpoints on the border with Turkey.

However, the replacement of Russian border guards with Armenian personnel along the borders with Iran and Turkey is being carried out in stages and depends on the development of the resources and capabilities of the Border Troops of the National Security Service.
