US President Donald Trump said the United States was not currently planning any new strikes on Iran, but remained prepared to carry them out if necessary.
Following an interview with Trump, the Financial Times reported that he had dismissed speculation that he was preparing to escalate the conflict with the Islamic Republic after the midterm elections, saying the US had no plans to strike Iran in the near future.
According to Trump, the US is getting what it wants from Iran. He said it appeared that Washington was achieving all its objectives.
However, the US president stressed that he would be ready to attack Iran if necessary, although there might be no reason to do so.
He added that indirect talks with Iran over the fate of its stockpile of enriched uranium were continuing. Trump said he was unhappy that the material remained buried under hundreds of tons of rock and that the issue was among those being discussed with Tehran.
He also confirmed that negotiations were ongoing and said it remained to be seen what they would lead to.
