YEREVAN. – The escalation of situation in Syria was undoubtedly predictable, Armenian opposition Heritage party secretary Stepan Safaryan said at a press conference on Tuesday.
He believes that events in Syria develop mainly according to the scenario in the Arab world, while the status quo is so much broken that it cannot be resumed. At the same time, it is not possible to predict where the shift of the authorities can lead to.
On this background, Safaryan believes that Armenia’s silence is extremely dangerous.
“At least the Armenian elite should have been interested in what other developments are possible and how it could have reacted to them,” he said.
According to Safaryan, after Syria, the Iran problem will become the key issue. Moreover, in case the testing of the nuclear weapon programs continue, Iran may become a nuclear power in 2013-2014.
