“I do not think there will be revolution in Iran. The government controls the situation and the opposition is not backed by all Iranians. It should be taken into consideration as well,” Azerbaijani political analyst Vafa Guluzade stated. “However, if the process continues and certain parts of society join the opposition, something might happen in prospect, especially so because the West is interested in it. The opposition is strong, as it comprises both former presidents and incumbent officials discontented with the current situation in Iran. Nothing is expected at this stage, I am sure,” Guluzade said. He added that Azerbaijan should not be interested in possible changes in Iran.

“Iran is not a negative factor for Azerbaijan. In fact Iran does no harm, therefore we should not be interested in any changes in the country. If Iran becomes pro-American as a result of revolution, it, under U.S. pressure, will even strengthen its ties with Armenia. We have already seen that U.S. cooperates with an aggressor, Armenia, as well as renders financial assistance to separatists. Thus, destabilization will bring no good,” the expert said.

Guluzade also pointed out that “Iran was the most westernized country under the Shah. However, the people disliked the regime because of its servility to the West… The Iranian elite were rolling in luxury, while common people were hungry. Presently, the nation supports the current regime. Even if the opposition wins, it will have the same stance, granting a little more liberty. However, history shows that freedom under a totalitarian regime finally overthrows this regime and splits the state. The Iranian Government is well aware of that,” he concluded.
