YEREVAN. - Censorship on network content may divide Internet space similar to state borders, head of Internet Society of Armenia NGO Grigor Sagiyan told the journalists on Thursday commenting on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) summit scheduled for Dec. 3-14 in Dubai.

The summit, where Armenia would participate as well, will discuss an issue of limiting access of Internet-websites of local states. 

Such limits exist in Muslim states and China, while Russia is going to join those states this fall. It is going to adopt a bill, which will close websites on the .ru portal without the court verdict. Western states are against such a decision. The summit will raise an issue whether the operator is responsible for the information content posted. If the operator may change photos and content posted, it means limiting access to foreign websites by this or that structures of the state.

“Moreover, Internet instead of uniting people will separate them,” G. Saginyan said.

To note, according to the data by the Alexa.com international resource, among the top visited sites in Armenia, eight are abroad. The top three sites are Facebook, Youtube and Google.com, fourth is Google.am. According to the Google, the most popular search words from Armenia included ‘download,’ ‘games,’ and ‘download for free.’
