YEREVAN. – Six drowning cases were recorded so far this year in Armenia’s Lake Sevan. Three of them were during the recreational swimming season, whereas the other three occurred in February, when the Lake had frozen. And one of the victims was a sixteen-year-old who was suffering from epilepsy, Special Water Rescue Squad Commander, Colonel Samvel Mkrtchyan said during a press conference on Thursday, speaking about the unfortunate incidents that occurred at Lake Sevan during the summer holiday season.  

In his words, there are twenty recorded cases of rescues from drowning, but many do not wish to be recorded. Samvel Mkrtchyan noted that the number of these cases is virtually the same overall, as compared with the same time period last year.       

He also informed that Lake Sevan’s two public beaches are filled to capacity at present, that five more beaches will open in the future, and therefore new equipment and employees will be needed. And the Government already has allocated the necessary means.
