Hungary has accepted the offer by Switzerland to normalize relations with Armenia, Hungarian FM Janos Martonyi informed on Wednesday. The fact that Azerbaijan has broken promise is “extremely regrettable, unacceptable and condemnable,” the Hungarian Minister said commenting on granting a pardon to Ramil Safarov by the Azerbaijani president after Safarov’s extradition from Hungary, Вloomberg reports. Martonyi said that Hungary condemns decision of the Azerbaijani President on granting a pardon to the Azerbaijani lieutenant Safarov, who killed the Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan in 2004, politics.hu reports. Martonyi also said that during his visit in Switzerland his counterpart had offered his country’s help in normalizing relations between Hungary and Armenia. “Hungary had acted in good faith in the case of the Azeri soldier and there had been no economic considerations involved. What’s most important now is to make Armenians understand that Hungary has always considered them as a friend,” Hungarian FM added. Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier that Ramil Safarov, a lieutenant of the Azerbaijani army, was extradited on August 31 from Hungary, where he was serving a life sentence—and with no expression of either regret or remorse—for the premeditated axe murder of Armenian lieutenant Gurgen Margaryan, in his sleep, during a NATO Partnership for Peace program in Budapest back in 2004. As expected, Ramil Safarov’s return to Baku was welcomed, as was his act of murder, by the officials of president Ilham Aliyev’s government and much of Azerbaijani society, and the Azerbaijani president immediately granted him a pardon. Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan announced on August 31 that Armenia is suspending its diplomatic ties with Hungary.
