YEREVAN. – Because of Iran’s adverse reaction, the West’s neutrality is inconvenient for Azerbaijan itself, Noravank Analytical Center Director Gagik Harutyunyan noted during a press conference on Wednesday.  

According to him, not solely Ramil Safarov’s extradition to Azerbaijan, but also the entire situation is escalating the tension, and the West’s expectations from Azerbaijan are growing.

“This complicates the situation because those countries, which they expect something from, are facing a more selfless attitude. This could be convenient for the West, but not for Azerbaijan, since Iran is a very formidable opponent,” the analyst stated.   

To note, in response to Azerbaijan’s readiness to lift the visa requirements with Turkey, Iran threatened to block the road leading to Nakhichevan if this visa requirement is not lifted for the Iranian citizens, too. According to analysts, Turkey and Iran are competing with one another toward having a sway over Azerbaijani territories.
