The crime of Ramil Safarov who killed an Armenian officer and later was pardoned by Azerbaijan is a terrible crime and should not be glorified, NATO head said.

In an interview with euronews NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen was asked to comment on anti-NATO protests he faced in Armenia.

“This is a very unfortunate case. But let me stress that I was not faced with anti-NATO demonstrations. I was faced with young protestors who demonstrated against the Azerbaijani decision to pardon the military officer Safarov.

That terrible crime shouldn’t be glorified. And I am deeply concerned that the Azerbaijani decision to pardon this army officer damages trust and it certainly doesn’t contribute to peace, to cooperation and reconciliation in the region,” euronews quotes NATO Secretary General.  

As reported earlier, around 200-300 youth held a demonstration in front of Yerevan State University and presidential residence during Rasmussen’s visit to Armenia.

The young people held banners protesting Hungary’s extradition of Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan and his being pardoned there.
