Yesterday, EU High Representative for Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton strongly condemned sentencing to death 2 out of 11 oppositionists in Iran. Iranian oppositionists were sent to the chair only for participation in protest actions after the 2009 presidential elections.
“EU strongly condemns sentencing to the death of these 2 oppositionists and expresses deep concern about the death penalty verdict against others, also engaged in mass proceedings,” Ashton’s statement reads.
According to her, EU opposes the capital punishment regardless its pursuits. In this regard, Ashton urged Iranian authorities to terminate carrying out of execution.
