Russia has not changed its position on sanctions against Iran. Natalya Timakova, Press Secretary of the RF President, reported that Dmitry Medvedev made the statement at his meeting with Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Russia’s position on sanctions against Iran remains unchanged, and the President expressed it in his special statement on Iran in Pittsburgh,” Timakova said.

The international community must be sure that Iranian nuclear program is a peaceful one, but sanctions cannot be ruled out in case Iran fails to honor the commitments.

One of the main aims of the Israeli Premier’s visit to Moscow was to get Russia’s support in pressuring Iran.

Israeli media claimed Moscow would agree to sanctions against Iranian agencies implementing the country’s nuclear program, but would object to large-scale measures that might damage the Iranian economy.
