Donor countries and international organizations pledged U.S. $ 10 bn to rebuild earthquake-hit Haiti, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated at the opening session of the Haiti conference, held in UN headquarters in New York, March 31, RFE/RL reports.

Haiti’s leadership presented the country’s rebuilding plan, elaborated jointly with foreign experts. According to the plan, Haiti will need $11.5 billion package within 10 years.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington will pledge U.S. $1.15 bn over the next two years. RF Permanent Representative to UN Vitaly Churkin announced Russia provided assistance of U.S. $ 5m to Haiti after the earthquake and plans to allot another $ 8m, RIA Novosti informs.

January 12, the devastating earthquake destroyed Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, killing 220.000 people and leaving over one million people homeless.
