YEREVAN. – The tailings of Tukhmanuk gold mine may affect irrigation water of Ararat valley, ecologists say.

Silva Adamyan, member of the Public Environmental Alliance, said the gold mine near Melikghyugh village is located in the area where sources of irrigation water are formed.

“Getik River passing nearby falls into Aparan water reservoir that is supplying irrigation water to Ararat valley,” she said, adding that the tailings can reach the river.

Ultimately, fruits and vegetables grown in the Ararat valley may be polluted, ecologists say.

According to environmental activists, Ministry of Health should investigate the effect of field operation on the health of rural residents.
