YEREVAN. – If anyone in Armenia can mention at least one country that will agree to supply natural gas to Armenia at a cheaper price than Russia, we stand ready to buy gas from that country.   

Ruling Republican Party MP Vardan Ayvazyan, who is also Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, told the abovementioned at a press conference on Monday.

Ayvazyan also proposed to form an NA ad hoc committee to discuss why Armenia’s consumers receive gas at $393, whereas it is purchased at the border at $189.

During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Armenia on December 2, 2013, the governments of Armenia and Russia signed several agreements on the supply of Russian natural gas to Armenia. These agreements included the sale of the remaining 20 percent of the ArmRusGazprom Company shares—which the Government of Armenia owned—to the Russian energy giant Gazprom Company—and to repay the half of Armenia’s accumulated debts for the gas supply—, and the sale of gas to Armenia, at the border, at Russian domestic prices.
