YEREVAN. – The “Against Legal Arbitrariness” NGO will review the relevant documents in connection with the case of Armenian captive Mamikon Khojoyan, and it will prepare a petition to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
Armenia’s first Human Rights Defender, “Against Legal Arbitrariness” NGO Executive Director, and public activist Larisa Alaverdyan told the abovementioned at a press conference on Thursday.
As per Alaverdyan, Azerbaijan’s premise that Khojoyan is the “leader of a spy team” was harshly criticized by the Azerbaijanis themselves.
“We need to be able to communicate with Mamikon Khojoyan; he must be able to speak, to tell exactly what happened to him.
“In addition, it is very important that the Armenian society show a shared position in this process. It should not be forgotten that it is not always that we get the opportunity to get the captive back alive,” she stressed.
Larisa Alaverdyan added that the Armenian body politic must do everything so that at least this incident becomes a subject of discussion at international level.
Mamikon Khojoyan, 77, a resident of Verin Karmiraghbyur village of Armenia’s Tavush Region, was taken captive by Azerbaijan on January 28. He suffers from mental illness. Azerbaijan returned the elderly to Armenia on Tuesday.
