YEREVAN. – In terms of foreign policy, Armenia shall have solely one road: European integration.
Karen Karapetyan, Executive Secretary of opposition Armenian National Movement (ANM), stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Friday. In his words, the present-day agenda of Armenia’s foreign policy is formed outside the country.
“It is dictated from Moscow. [Russian-led] Customs Union accession has become the primary task of Armenia. But I don’t consider this to be ‘irreversible,’” Karapetyan said, and expressed a view that there are no “irreversible” processes in politics.
The ANM official also stressed that the most recent events unraveling around Ukraine have shown that, “the idea of a Customs Union is empty, and it is based on blackmail and coercion.”
“Such a union cannot exist for long. Furthermore, the Ukrainian events became an impetus for the Armenian body politic to fight for its freedom of choice until victory,” Karen Karapetyan concluded.
Following the talks that were held on September 3, 2013 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. In December 2013, the “road map” for Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union was adopted. And in January of this year, the Government of Armenia approved the action plan for the implementation of this “road map.” Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union.
