Saturday is declared “silence day” in Crimea in the lead-up to Sunday’s referendum in the peninsula, UNN reported.

Crimea Information Minister Dmitry Polonsky had earlier informed that there will not be an official ban on campaigning on the eve of the plebiscite on whether or not the peninsula, which is formally a part of Ukraine, should join Russia.

“Under international standards, however, we have decided that there must be a ‘silence day,’” he said.

In Polonsky’s words, this means that there will be no referendum campaign in the Crimean media on Saturday. But the calls for participating in the plebiscite are not prohibited.
