Russia has always distinguished the post-Soviet expanse as a special zone of vitally important interests, including the military format.
Political scientist Sergey Markedonov stated the aforementioned Friday at an international conference on NATO and the South Caucasus.
As per Markedonov, the ex-Soviet Union had global ambitions, whereas today’s Russia not only does not want, but it is incapable of, global ambitions because this will require changes in the economy and the acceptance of a mobilization model, which is impossible.
The political scientist stressed that Russia has post-Soviet ambitions.
“The interests of Russia and the West are extremely different and asymmetric in the South Caucasus. For Russia, the Caucasus and the nearby abroad is a zone of vitally important interests. The West [,on the other hand,] sees the South Caucasus as a part of a larger puzzle,” Sergey Markedonov stressed.
