The EU and Armenia have committed at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius last November to further develop and strengthen cooperation in all areas of mutual interest within the Eastern Partnership, spokesman for EU Commissioner said in response to Armenian News-NEWS.am's inquiry.
Peter Stano, spokesman for EU Commissioner Štefan Füle, said Armenia and EU “have jointly stressed the importance of revisiting the basis for our relations building on what we have achieved together so far”.
His comments followed the remarks by President of France Francois Hollande who said EU can have a specific model for Armenia. During his visit to Yerevan, Hollande said Armenia can combine the relationship with EU and participation in Russia’s Customs Union.
During a joint press conference with his French counterpart, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan said it would be very desirable if Armenia were to be made a special proposal on EU association.
In his comments, Mr. Stano said revisiting the legal basis implies a complex exercise to be carried out jointly with the Armenian partners and involving all EU Member States and relevant EU institutions.
“Armenia's intended accession to the Customs Union will naturally have to be taken into consideration when rethinking the EU-Armenia relations. We expect Armenia to tell us more precisely what are their limitations deriving from their Customs Union commitments and how they intend to proceed in building the ties with the EU taking into account their new obligations towards the Customs Union,” he said.
