On Thursday, which is the second day of his official visit to Austria, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan met with Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna and the head the Catholic Church of Austria. 

The interlocutors recorded that the relations between the Armenian Apostolic and the Catholic Churches have always been at a high level, and these relations have taken on a new content ever since Armenia’s independence in 1991.

Sargsyan stressed that Armenia is interested in developing cooperation with Austria, and he underscored the collaboration between the two churches in strengthening the friendship between the Armenian and the Austrian peoples.
In terms of developing the relations between the Armenian Apostolic and the Catholic Churches, they also highlighted the opening of Armenia’s Embassy in the Holy See.

President Sargsyan and Cardinal Schönborn stated that close ties also have been formed between the Armenian Apostolic and the Austrian Catholic Churches.

At the end of the talk, the Armenian President thanked the Archbishop of Vienna and the Austrian government for their warm disposition towards and assistance to the Austrian-Armenian community.

While in Vienna, President Serzh Sargsyan also paid tribute to Austrian writer and humanist Franz Werfel by visiting and laying a wreath to his monument.
