YEREVAN. – Whoever is elected president of Turkey, this country’s position on Armenia and the Armenians will not change to a large extent. 

Armenian turkologist Ruben Melkonyan noted the above-said, at a press conference on Monday, reflecting on the presidential election to be held in Turkey on August 10. 

Melkonyan recalled that the next Turkish president will be elected by the people for the first time.  

In response to the query as to what will change for Armenia if incumbent PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan were elected the next president of Turkey, the turkologist noted that Turkey’s political system, mindset, and political foundations are anti-Armenian in nature.

“Unless the ideological approaches toward Armenians change [in Turkey], Turkey’s attitude towards Armenia will remain the same, even if [UN Secretary-General] Ban Ki-moon were elected president of this country,” Ruben Melkonyan stated.
