The massacres of Armenians was mentioned during the meeting in German Bundetsag dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War I.
President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert opened meeting by noting that the First World War marked the fall of Ottoman Empire and started a new era at the same time creating new trouble spots in the South Caucasus and Balkans. As an example, he mentioned Armenian massacres, noting that exile and extermination of Armenians turned mass deportation and killings into an instrument of war.
Referring to the difficult process of overcoming consequences of the two world wars, Lammert considered it in the context of European integration program and stressed that the European example of non-violence is the main message of respect for memory of victims of the two world wars of the last century.
The meeting was attended by MPs, members of the government and the Constitutional Court of Germany, former German President Richard von Weizsäcker, former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, and the keynote speaker professor Alfred Grosser.
