The main challenges to regional security first of all have to do with domestic developments. Relative poverty (in various degrees) of the regional states remains the key problem of economy and citizens, Konstantin Zatulin, the Director of the CIS Institute and RF State Duma member, told NEWS.am.
Threat of war or military conflicts and different views on the South Caucasus map are additional factors. In particular, the number of states recognized by certain states or organizations varies. “I think that Abkhazia and South Ossetia were in fact independent states before being recognized by Russia. The same with Karabakh. No one can deprive Karabakh of independence without using force. If force is used, I am not sure they will succeed,” he said.
The present state of affairs in the region necessitates cooperation formats without borders being of importance. In this context all threats of war and blockade must be forgotten. “In this case different nations will mind their own business,” Zatulin concluded.
