YEREVAN. – The trilateral meeting that took place in Sochi can be described as a regular and full-fledged failure of Azerbaijan's international military and political blackmail as well as adventurous actions.

Alexander Iskandaryan, head of Caucasus Institute, said the meeting had different outcomes for each president.

“If we speak about Ilham Aliyev, it allowed him to come out of the difficult situation. He tried to save face after crushing defeat of Azerbaijani armed forces,” the analyst told reporters on Monday.

As to what the meeting gave Vladimir Putin, the analyst believes that meeting was not of less importance for Russian leader in terms of goodwill and the opportunity to play a positive role amid Ukrainian events. For Armenia, this meeting was a platform to once again call for resolution of the conflict through peaceful negotiations based on the three fundamental principles: the right of peoples to self-determination, territorial integrity and non-use of force at the contact line.

“It should be noted that for Armenia any meeting in this format is also a political aspect of security,” he added.

Asked how the Sochi meeting may affect situation at the line of contact, the analyst noted that not the meeting but previous events that clearly showed the real value of the Armenian and Azerbaijani armed forces may affect the situation. 

“At the same time it should be noted that the Sochi meeting will also have an impact, and the situation on frontline will at least return to the state that existed before July 31,” Iskandaryan emphasized.
