YEREVAN. – A group of organizations and over 30 people have sent open letters to Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and permanent representative at UN Zohrab Mnatsakanyan calling to raise the questions of Yazidis at UN.

The letter says people in Iraq are facing humanitarian catastrophe as a result of actions of Islamist and terrorist groups, while majority of victims are ethnic and religious groups, including Yazidis.

According to UN data as of July 9, over 850,000 people have been deported from Iraq over the last month. In fact over 20,000 Yazidis are in a blockade left without food and water in Iraq's north.

“Deportations are accompanied by pogroms and crimes against humanity, kidnapping of women, trafficking, rape and massacres of children. Situation in Iraq requires not only humanitarian assistance, but humanitarian military intervention of the world community. Being an agency authorizing the military intervention, UN Security Council can approve bringing peacekeeping forces to Iraq in order to prevent genocide,” the letter says.

“As a representative of a state, the people of which survived genocide, as well as a state having Yazidi minority, and as a responsible member of the international community, we ask Armenia to raise a question about the ongoing events in Iraq at the UN Geneal Assembly, and to urge members of the Security Council to decide on military intervention”.

The letter is signed by “Sinjar”, a national association of the Yazidis, National Committee of Yazidis, National Union of Yazidi and “Shangal” union.
