YEREVAN. – Russia has defeated the United States in a chess game on Armenia and Azerbaijan, former Ombudswoman Larisa Alaverdyan said commenting on the recent trilateral meeting in Sochi.

The meeting held without inviting the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs was a response of Kremlin to the provocations by White House.

“Putin clearly showed that regional situation is under Moscow's control,” she told reporters on Wednesday.

Larisa Alaverdyan believes that the statement on peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict by Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev nullified the American side's assertions that the conflict is not frozen any longer.

“The interest of the United States in aggravation of the situation on border is quite understandable. Washington, based on its geopolitical ambitions, aims to create a burning circle around Russia. However, the White House lost the game,” Alaverdyan said.

As to Co-Chair James Warlick's statement that the United States are inspired by the meeting of Armenia and Azerbaijan leaders is nothing but “an attempt to make the best of a bad bargain”.

Trilateral meeting of Serzh Sargsyan, Vlaidmir Putin and Ilham Aliyev was held in Sochi on Sunday at the initiative of the Russian side. The parties confirmed their commitment to the principles for peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict.
