YEREVAN. – If crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh deepened further, Russia would not stay aside, military expert Vlaidmir Yevseev said.

He named “politically short-sighted” those who doubt that Russia is able to defend its allies even now when it is drawn into Ukrainian crisis.

“I think the meeting in Sochi could revise the situation, and there would be no serious provocations on the border in the near future,” he said during a press conference on Thursday.

Objectively speaking, expert noted, everyone is interested in maintaining the status quo in Nagorno-Karabakh, because any changes could lead to serious consequences.

“In addition to the fact that maintaining the status quo most likely is the best case scenario, I personally believe that Russia should be more active in Nagorno-Karabakh: cooperation can develop in different ways. Russian political parties may also be more active in the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic,” he emphasized.

Yevseyev added that the NKR has registered certain economic growth: we can talk about some progress in the extraction and processing of minerals, some success in the development of energy.

“Even in such circumstances, the NKR is developing. Russia should more actively help the republic,” he resumed.
