Any talks between the parties of the Karabakh conflict are an opportunity to prepare them for mutual compromises, as all the territorial conflicts can only be resolved by means of concessions, President of the Strategy humanitarian-political center Alexander Surgunov told NEWS.am, speaking of the possible results of a Sargsyan-Aliyev-Medvedev meeting in St. Petersburg.

“Today the socio-political situation in both Armenia and Azerbaijan is strained. The sides do not meet halfway, and such meetings are a mere diplomatic incentive to somehow reconcile their positions and thus settle the conflict, as war is an alternative to any negotiations,” the expert noted.

As regards Moscow’s enhanced role in the negotiation process, particularly in the context of intensified Russian-Turkish relations, Sungurov said: “The most important thing is that the talks go on, and the prerequisites can be different, including the intensified dialogue between Moscow and Ankara.”

Commenting on Russian media reports on rapid deployment of peacekeepers in Karabakh, and Turkish contingent in Nakhchivan, the expert said it is a rather undesirable scenario. This can happen only if the situation escalates in the Karabakh conflict zone. As long as talks are underway between the parties, no threat of escalation exists. The negotiations are underway, so such a scenario is unlikely,” Sungurov stressed.
